Historical Context
This project continues the pioneering work begun in 2004 by Michael Naimark and Mark Tribe with their ArtAndTechPgms wiki - "A Wiki Directory of Academic Art and Technology Programs." That original directory was created as "a living resource for prospective students, faculty, and others" and documented the emerging landscape of academic programs spanning Art and Science, Computer Art, Digital Art, Interactive Art, Media Art, New Media Art, and Technology-based Art.

Nearly two decades later, as the field has evolved and expanded globally, this interactive map project was commissioned by Michael Naimark and Anna Greenspan in 2021 to modernize and extend that original vision. Where the 2004 wiki focused primarily on academic programs, this contemporary iteration broadens the scope to include spaces, events, and other institutions that comprise today's diverse new media ecosystem.
